Oversized Road Transport

Oversized road transport – abnormal transport – the transportation of loads whose weight or dimensions exceed the parameters set for permissible vehicle combinations. Specialized trailers and additional safety measures must be used for this type of transport.

To carry out oversized road transport, it is necessary to obtain the appropriate permits.

How does such transport work?

After obtaining the necessary permits, the route must be carefully planned, and proper preparations must be made to ensure safety and minimize potential risks.

➡️ First, the cargo needs to be precisely defined.

Particular attention should be paid to its dimensions, weight, and shape. Based on this, a transport plan should be developed, considering the route, travel time, stopover points, and any potential obstacles that may arise during the transport.

➡️ Next, the availability of road infrastructure should be assessed.

Bridges, tunnels, viaducts, and other structures need to be identified, as they can influence the choice of route and the method of transporting the goods. It’s essential to ensure that the chosen vehicle can move freely and deliver the goods on time, avoiding potential hazards.

What if road infrastructure analysis reveals objects that could pose a problem during transport?

In such cases, temporarily modifying or dismantling such objects may be necessary. This may involve altering road signs or other infrastructure elements to allow the transport to proceed.

In some instances, especially when oversized transport could impact normal road traffic and safety, temporarily closing roads or imposing restrictions may be necessary.

Of course, all these actions must comply with the law and ensure road traffic safety.

➡️ Ensure that the vehicle designated for transport is properly equipped and adapted to the cargo.

Vehicles used for oversized transport

Choosing the right vehicle for such cargo must be meticulous. The truck must safely perform the transport.

These vehicles are typically longer, taller, wider, and have more axles than standard trucks. Their construction must be adapted to carry large masses and ensure stability.

Depending on the type of cargo and its specifications, the vehicle may be equipped with hydraulic supports that allow the load to be lifted and placed at the correct height. Cargo covers provide protection against weather conditions and potential damage during transport.

It’s also essential to use securing straps to keep the cargo in place.

Safety aspects must be 100% guaranteed!

Obtaining a permit

Depending on the vehicle category and the roads along the route, permits for such transport are issued by the relevant authorities, e.g. in Poland, county governors, the General Director of National Roads and Motorways, or city mayors in urban counties.

The application must include:

✅ Information regarding the parameters of the non-standard vehicle

✅ The route it will take on public roads.

The relevant authorities analyze the request and assess whether the planned movement complies with legal regulations and traffic safety.

What challenges do organizers of oversized transport face?

The main challenge is identifying hazards on the road. During abnormal transport, the risk of road collisions is increased.

Develop a safety strategy to minimize the risks associated with oversized transport. This strategy may involve measures such as a police escort, which helps secure the route, manage traffic, and provide support in emergency situations.
