The summer season in international transport means not only heavier traffic, but also a range of additional restrictions introduced by European countries. As tourist traffic increases, many nations impose weekend or seasonal driving bans for heavy goods vehicles, especially on routes leading to popular holiday destinations.
In the second part of our series “Summer Driving Bans in Europe 2025”, we take a closer look at the rules in Croatia, Italy, and Slovenia – countries that see thousands of trucks heading to the Adriatic coast every summer.
🇭🇷 Croatia – Summer driving ban for HGVs
During the summer period, Croatia enforces driving bans for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW and longer than 14 meters.
➡️ Ban hours:
🔸 Friday: 15:00 – 23:00
🔸 Saturday: 05:00 – 14:00
🔸 Sunday and public holidays: 14:00 – 23:00
➡️ Affected routes:
🔸 D1 national road (Zagreb – Split)
🔸 D8 coastal road (Adriatic Highway)
🔸 D9 (Metković – border with Bosnia and Herzegovina)
➡️ Exemptions:
The bans do not apply to vehicles transporting:
🔸 perishable goods
🔸 fuel
🔸 live animals
🔸 humanitarian aid
🇮🇹 Italy – Summer driving ban
In Italy, HGVs over 7.5 tonnes GVW are subject to driving bans on designated days and times throughout the year.
➡️ Ban hours:
🔸 Sundays and public holidays: 09:00 – 22:00
🔸 Saturdays (July & August): 08:00 – 16:00
🔸 Peak days (e.g., 15 August – Ferragosto): 07:00 – 22:00
➡️ Affected routes:
🔸 The entire national road and motorway network
🔸 Additional local bans – e.g. on A22 (Brenner route) towards Austria
➡️ Exemptions:
Exemptions apply to transport of:
🔸 perishable goods
🔸 fuel
🔸 live animals
🔸 medicine and humanitarian supplies
🇸🇮 Slovenia – Summer driving ban for HGVs in 2025
Slovenia also imposes bans on heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW, primarily on weekends and public holidays.
➡️ Ban hours:
🔸 Sundays and public holidays: 08:00 – 22:00
🔸 Good Friday: 14:00 – 22:00
➡️ Affected roads:
🔸 All motorways and expressways throughout the country
➡️ Exemptions:
🔸 Exemptions apply to vehicles carrying:
🔸 perishable goods
🔸 fuel
🔸 live animals
🔸 humanitarian aid
